ROME WINS THE EUROPEAN ASSEMBLY FOR THE SPORT OF GAY 2008

ROME TO HOST THE 2008 EUROPEAN GENERAL

ASSEMBLY SPORTS OF GAY

Arcigay Group Fish and Rome, backed by Agensport – Regione Lazio , have been successful in obtaining the appointment of Rome as the host city for the 2008 General Assembly of the EGLSF ( European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation ), with the unanimous vote of the 100 delegates from all over Europe that met at Madrid some days ago. The Assembly will be in charge of assessing the candidates to host the 2011 European Gay Games’, known as EUROGAMES . This event is a sort of Gay Olympics, involving 8000 Gay and Lesbian athletes from over 40 countries, participating in around 20 different sports.

The EGLSF has its own representative at the Council of Europe who holds an advisory role in projects aiming at fighting discrimination and homophobia in sport. Furthermore, the EGLSF is a member of the “ Football Against Racism in Europe ” (FARE) network, an organisation that fights racism and homophobia in football, recognised by the FIFA . Last month FARE, together with UEFA, sent a brochure to all Italian football clubs suggesting measures to fight homophobia in football stadiums.

“We are delighted about this victory, because it means that, for the first time, Italy will lead a European debate on the fight against discrimination against Gays and Lesbians through sport– stated Fabrizio Marrazzo, chairperson of Arcigay Sport and Paolo Sordini, president of Gruppo Pesce Roma, supporters of the Rome bid – because sport helps integration and also to fight homophobia that many gay and lesbian youths encounter when they start practising a sport and find they are often rejected by their fellows.”

Marrazzo adds : “I make a plea to public as well as private organisations to help us put forward Rome as a candidate to host the 2011 European ‘Gay Games’, since this could contribute positively to electing Rome as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games.
